THE BLENDING ORGAN · FRAGRANCE STUDIO

A perfume is not a smell. It is a smell that changes for eight hours, because every material in it evaporates at its own rate. You are handed a target curve and an organ of eighteen real materials. Build the shape.

1
Top, heart and base are speeds, not ranks. Lemon is gone in twenty minutes. Rose runs for two hours. Sandalwood is still on your wrist tomorrow. None of that is a hierarchy of importance.
2
Fixatives hold up everything above them. Oakmoss, labdanum, coumarin and the musks lower the vapour pressure of the whole blend. Without a base, a formula collapses in an hour no matter how much you use.
3
Dose is not linear. Perceived strength rises as roughly the 0.55 power of concentration, so doubling a material adds about half again. Aldehydes, indoles and oakmoss are ruinous at 1% and lovely at a tenth of that.
4
Concentration — cologne, toilette, parfum, extrait — sets how much oil reaches the skin. It moves the whole curve up or down. It does not change its shape.
