Repair-or-Replace Calculator

Estimate whether a repair is worth exploring before you spend money or open the object.

Repaired household object on a workbench with tools, a part, receipt, and decision checklist.

Repair decisions are rarely just math. Replacement cost matters, but so do parts, time, risk, waste, expected life, and whether the object has personal value.

This calculator turns those factors into a practical recommendation category. It is designed to slow down the decision before a fix becomes more expensive or less safe than expected.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a realistic replacement price and repair estimate.
  2. Add expected DIY time, parts availability, safety risk, sentimental value, and likely life extension.
  3. Use the result as a triage step before getting a quote, ordering parts, or choosing replacement.

What the result means

A high score means repair may be worth exploring, especially when parts are available and the repair meaningfully extends the object’s life.

A low or red result does not mean the object is worthless. It means the repair may need better information, a professional, or a safer replacement path.

Assumptions and limitations

The repair estimate should include parts, shipping, tools you would not otherwise use, and professional labor if relevant.

Safety risk is a hard modifier. Electrical, gas, pressure, battery, structural, and heat repairs can outweigh favorable cost math.
