Quiz: Keyboard Acoustics & Modding

What is the single biggest improvement you can make to a keyboard's sound?

What does 'gasket mounting' do acoustically?

The 'PE foam mod' involves placing a polyethylene sheet between which two components?

Which keycap material generally produces a lower-pitched, more muted sound?

Why is the spacebar the most acoustically challenging key?

Thock

A deep, rounded, lower-pitched keystroke sound. Associated with lubed switches, gasket mounts, dampening materials, and nylon or PC housings.

Clack

A higher-pitched, sharper keystroke sound. Typical of metal plates, clicky switches, and undampened or tray-mounted cases.

Spring Ping

A metallic ringing sound produced by the switch spring vibrating after compression. Eliminated by lubing the spring with oil or grease.

Linear Switch

A switch with smooth travel from top to bottom, no tactile bump or click. Examples: Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow, Alpaca.

Tactile Switch

A switch with a noticeable bump at the actuation point. Examples: Cherry MX Brown, Boba U4T, Holy Panda.

Clicky Switch

A switch that produces an audible click at actuation via a click bar or click jacket. Examples: Cherry MX Blue, Box Jade, Box Navy.

Gasket Mount

A mounting system using rubber/silicone gaskets to suspend the plate and PCB. Isolates typing vibration from the case, producing a softer sound.

Tray Mount

A mounting system where the PCB screws directly to standoffs in the case. Rigid, potentially pinging, but simple and affordable.

Tape Mod

Applying 3–4 layers of painter's tape to the back of the PCB. Adds mass, changes resonance, and produces a deeper, more marbly sound. Cost: ~$4.

Krytox 205g0

A PTFE-based grease used to lubricate switches and stabilizers. The community standard for linears and tactiles. Reduces friction and spring ping.
