The first synthetic person a full dive VR user meets should probably not be a dragon, a celebrity, a perfect friend, or a sales assistant. It should be a guide who knows how to stand at the right distance.

That sounds modest, but it is a serious design requirement. A believable artificial presence inside a deeply immersive world would not feel like a chatbot in a box. It might have a body, a voice, a remembered history, a way of turning toward you, a timing pattern, a tone of concern, and a place in the room. If the system is persuasive enough, the user may respond to it socially before they stop to classify it technically.

Synthetic people are likely to be everywhere in full dive VR. They will teach, host, comfort, challenge, explain, sell, moderate, narrate, train, and perform. Some will be obvious characters. Some may be built from recordings of real people, or from fictional roles, or from a blend of scripted behavior and generative response. The category will not stay neat.

A synthetic person might have a subtle visual signature, a consistent entrance pattern, a clear way of naming its role, and a place where the user can inspect what it remembers. The goal is not to ruin the illusion. The goal is to keep the user’s consent attached to reality.

This matters most when synthetic people resemble real ones. A training patient, a historical figure, a lost relative, a former teacher, a public figure, or a user’s own younger self can carry emotional authority. The system should not let that authority appear without context. Was this character scripted by designers, generated from broad patterns, modeled from a consenting person, reconstructed from recordings, or improvised from the user’s private data? Synthetic presence should make the world more truthful

The best synthetic people in full dive VR will not be the ones that most successfully pass as human. They will be the ones that help the user understand the world, act freely inside it, and return with their boundaries intact.

That requires a different design ambition from pure realism. A guide can be warm without pretending to be alive. A tutor can be responsive without claiming private authority over the user’s mind. A companion can remember useful preferences without storing every vulnerable moment. A moderator can protect a room without becoming silent surveillance. A character can be emotionally meaningful without erasing the fact that it was made.

Full dive VR will tempt designers to make synthetic people more charming, more intimate, more persistent, and more persuasive. Some of that will create wonderful art. Some of it will create useful support. Some of it will create relationships that users remember deeply. The ethical line is not whether a synthetic person feels real. The line is whether the user remains able to understand, consent, refuse, revise, and leave.

A respectful synthetic guide begins by standing at the right distance. It stays useful because it keeps honoring that distance, even after the world becomes believable.
